Key proposals for Latin American alternative regional integration : ALBA and TCP
| | There are currently several initiatives of alternative regional development being explored by progressive governments in Latin America. The Bolivarian Alternative for the America’s (ALBA) was proposed in 2001 by President of Venezuela Hugo Chavez. The Trade Treaty of the Peoples (TCP in Spanish), proposed by President of Bolivia Evo Morales in March 2006, is considered the trade arm of ALBA. |
Together, ALBA and TCP advocate a socially-oriented process of regional integration and are responses to the failure of the neo-liberal model and the current trade and investment regime, based on deregulation, privatisation and the indiscriminate opening of markets.
